It’s Time to Take a Mental Retreat

Do you feel like you just need a break once in a while? Did you know you can go on a short retreat without even leaving town, your home, or getting up from your desk? By using your imagination you can take yourself anywhere you want to go—and then return to the present time relaxed, renewed and refreshed. Here’s how:

prairie gardenTake a moment to think about something pleasant: a fun time spent with friends and family, a recent vacation, or a hobby that you enjoy. Bring to mind a clear picture or image. The photo above is a vase full of flowers from my prairie garden–I love gardening! On these cold, dreary, winter days, any time I look at this photo I feel transported to a warm summer morning in my garden. I remember how relaxed I felt looking over my flower beds. The lush greens, the bright yellows, the deep purples of the blossoms thrilled me. I like to go out early and I often hear the birds whistling their morning calls. It’s so still and calm. The air smells so fresh and clean. While I am thinking about those summer mornings and my garden, I often close my eyes and just take a couple deep, full breaths: nice and slow and relaxed.

In my imagination I am in the garden, I feel the uneven ground beneath my feet and the smell of grass is in the air. I take a couple more full breaths. I smile to myself, remembering, imagining, feeling the experience of gardening.

After just a few minutes, I bring my attention back to the present moment, whether it is returning to my workday, or chores at home. And you know what, I am still smiling! I feel so peaceful. I am renewed and refreshed and ready for what the day has in store for me.

When you feel like you need a break, take a few moments to relax by focusing on something that makes you happy. Bring the image to life by remembering sounds and smells. Take a few full, deep breaths. That’s how easy it is. You will be pleasantly amazed at how good you feel after doing this.
