Champions in Women’s Health

Do you know someone who has made a difference in women’s health in your community?

We are currently seeking nominations for the Champions in Women’s Health award!

Nominees may include: consumer advocates, volunteers, health care professionals, non-profit employees, or individuals who have overcome a significant health issue and inspired other women to become advocates for their own health.

Every year at our Annual Gala we present the Champions in Women’s Health award to those who have shown exemplary leadership and devotion to women’s health in Wisconsin.

Last year’s Champions included:

Barbra Beckert– Milwaukee Office Director, Disability Rights Wisconsin; Former Assistant Director, Milwaukee Jewish Council for Community Relations; Co-founder, Chair, Make It Work Milwaukee, Milwaukee

Barbra was driven to address the injustices of those with disabilities after the premature birth of her son. She has been a leader in advocating for the legal and human rights of people with disabilities. One of her many endeavors has been working to reform the mental health system in Milwaukee, including improving services and safety for women at the Milwaukee Mental Health Complex.

Karen Brewer, BSN, RN– Public Health Nurse, Wood County Department of Human Services; Chair, Healthy People Wood County Mental Health Implementation Team, Wisconsin Rapids

Karen has been a nurse with the Wood County Health Department for more than 20 years. Through her passion to care for those with mental health issues she became the chairperson of the Healthy People Wood County Mental Health Implementation Team. Her leadership has brought together a diverse group of consumers and professionals to create new programs and educational opportunities.
